WILD MOUNTAIN THYME [LIVE] - The Apex Singers

Stream 'Wild Mountain Thyme' on our album release 'Stravaig': https://ditto.fm/stravaig We are delighted to release our rendition of the Scottish/Irish folk song Wild Mountain Thyme, filmed and recorded live at Hallé at St Michael’s. After filming and releasing eighteen isolation arrangements exclusively to our Patreon community throughout the year, this is our first publicly released video of 2021. The melody and lyrics of Wild Mountain Thyme are a variant of the traditional folk song “The Braes of Balquhither”. At first the song may lead you to believe it is written to a lover, but the lyrics in the third verse indicate that this is not a love song to a person, but to the landscape. If you have enjoyed our music you can become an Apex Angel. This means you can help support the group and gain access to exclusive creative content! DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY - The Apex Singers

It is hard to pinpoint the exact origins of this beautiful tune. “Down to the River to Pray” has been referred to as a hymn, a spiritual and an Appalachian song. Some believe it was a Native American Tribal song that was adapted to include Christian lyrics. It is attributed to George H. Allan in the Slave Songbook of 1867 and Alison Krauss popularised it in the 2000 film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? The song also is known by alternate titles such as “Down in the Valley to Pray,” “Come, Let Us All Go Down” and “The Good Old Way.” Whatever the title and origin might truly be, this deeply spiritual song is about keeping the faith in a time of darkness.
